Will you Dance with me?

A Romantic Encounter that began with Music

It was a quiet night at the Bull & Bear, unusual for a Friday. Perhaps the rain was deterring the tourists …

But he was there, sitting in his favorite chair, drinking a Manhatten. I was sitting in the opposite corner, drinking my Vodka Martini. I honestly didn’t think he had noticed me.

A little 3-top Jazz band was playing their set. They created a sweet mood floating through the air of the room. It allowed you to forget your troubles … and the rain!

No, surprise, he started tapping his toes to the beat of the drum. His fingers “played” the piano along the edge of his table. Smoke from his cigarette swirled around his drink. He didn’t have a care in the world – he was having too much fun!

The band noticed the man, always dressed to the nine’s. They appreciated how he was interacting with the music, so they played a tad louder.

And with a blast from the horn, he got up with a spin and the slide of his foot. One hand on his belt buckle, the other extended in my direction, as a swished this way and that.

Did he see me?

Was he motioning to me?!? If I get up and he wasn’t, I’ll be so embarrassed. If I don’t, I will have lost my chance forever.

I took the chance!

I floated across the room, placed my hand in his, and he pulled me close. His hand pressed against the small of my back, his nose in my hair.

The band took his queue and slowed the music way down just for a few moments. As we gazed into each other’s eyes, time stopped.

Then with a spin and tip of his hat, the music flared up again, and we danced the night away!

We danced on a beautiful, quiet, rainy night at the Bull & Bear.

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.
